Participating in Hancock Co. SKYWARN
Anyone can join SKYWARN, and any licensed amateur can participate
in on-air nets.
However, we do ask you follow a few simple steps. These steps will make sure we remain safe, and pass effective reports to NWS.
- Always place your safety first!
- Attend a basic SKYWARN training course at least once a year. If there is advanced training available, we encourage you to take it.
- Read and follow the instructions in the Hancock Co. SKYWARN Operations Manual.
- Have multiple ways to receive weather alerts.
Net Locations
SKYWARN Nets can be found on the W8FT repeater in Findlay, Ohio.
Hancock County SKYWARN would like to thank the Findlay Radio Club for the use of their repeater systems.
Coverage is available county-wide, but an external or mobile antenna is recommended outside of Findlay City Limits.
- Primary: W8FT 2 Meter Repeater, 147.150+, PL 88.5
- Secondary: W8FT 440 Repeater, 444.150+ PL 88.5 (This repeater is Analog/Fusion, expect occasional static bursts on non-Fusion radios)
- Tertiary: 147.510 Simplex
During long-term events, other options may be utilized, such as portable cross-band repeaters. Your NCS will advise where to go if these are needed.
Training
While we do not have rules that override or differ from National Weather Service guidelines, we encourage all Net Control Stations and Spotters to review the Hancock Co. SKYWARN spotter manual, located below. This outlines procedures specific to our area, which assists all participants in safe and effective operations. This manual is subject to change, so we suggest you download a copy yearly!
2025 Manual will be out soon! In the meantime, please review the SKYWARN video by N1OF, as well as the SKYWARN Net Control Script.
